Find Care & Housing
So I phoned an ask a nurse number, described my injury and she said that I should see someone asap. So I risked going to emergency. I took a cab.

To make a long story short. I broke two toes. My baby toe and the one beside it. I've got crutches and need to see an orthopedic surgeon. Oh joy, oh bliss.

Here I thought the doc was going to come around the corner with a you've wasted our time look on his face. Instead he said "What'd you do?" He was really nice. Asked me if I'd had dinner yet. Said he could bring me a sandwich. I felt old though. You know how old people get treated. That's how I felt. Sigh.....

Anyway, it wasn't that busy there, all things considered. I was masked. Hopefully I didn't catch anything that's going around.

Gershun: I hope that you recover quickly. May want to see your PCP, but definitely avoid the ER. You may want to see if your primary care has an 'Ask a Nurse' phone number. And perchance you could get delivery for anything you may need to recover.

Ah, I love my friends on here! You warm my heart.

I didn't know that about blood clots Real. Although I was thinking about that looking at my foot and seeing edema.

Thx, Real and Glad for your recommendations but I can't get out to pick anything up right now. I'll keep an eye on it carefully.

Thx for caring you guys!

Gershun, maybe some Biofreeze? You must have some sore muscles, maybe muscles you didn't know you had? Ice should reduce the swelling, compresses? Is there a nurseline you can call?

Gershun, I highly recommend a product called Dit Da Jow, it is sold as an antiseptic but, it is used by martial artists to heal sprains, bruising and pain from practice.

It is amazing stuff. We buy ours from a local dojo. I would call around and see if you can get it around you. They might even just apply some for you to try.

I hope you feel better quickly.

Just a heads up, elevating a foot injury can cause blood clots. Please be careful.

Yes Golden, although I never need an excuse to put my feet up and read but now I have one. :)

It's pretty swollen right now. I doubt I could put a shoe on and go for a walk right now. It's the upper part of my left foot on the top and side.

Anyway, I'll just limp along and see how it looks and feels in the am.

Ouch, gershun. I did that at work a number of years ago. R.I.C.E helped for the first hours then by evening I felt better when I got up and walked a little around the house. My boss had sent me home for that day and the next, but the next day I decided to go to work as sitting around with it elevated wasn't helping any more, I think the walking improved the circulation - not doing a marathon or anything just getting from one place to another.

Not saying it would be the same for you you have to go with how you are feeling,

Minor to what you did I dropped something heavy on one toe last week which swelled and bruised nicely then a couple of days later stubbed my little toe on the other foot. They are getting better. Good excuse to sit with my feet up and get some reading done. lol

Hubs is working in addition to being with his parents this week so he can't be here but I'll be really careful so as not to fall again. I just turned 61. I'm not there yet.....at least I hope not. :O

Gershun,
It is possible to have an injured foot x-rayed in the E.R. and not find a fracture.
When I fell, it was not discovered as a broken fibula (ankle) until 2 years later when I fell again and broke the other one, showing an old prior break.

Foot hurt and swelled, could not walk on it for a very long time.

An urgent care does exams, x-rays, and casting. It may be less busy, cleaner, if Canada has urgent care.

It is best to have your husband come home, but that is just my opinion. The first 3 days are the hardest.

Thx you guys! It does hurt a lot. I live five minutes away from the hospital but as I said before in a triage situation I think I'd be stuck in the waiting room for hours. If it's really bad tomorrow then I'll see if my doc can squeeze me in for an appt.

Meanwhile I guess I won't be going for any walks this week. Hubs is at his parents this week so my cat is gonna have to take care of me for a change.

Just make sure you check in with your GP if it continues to get worse, the level of pain and bruising is somewhat worrisome.

Soak your foot in some epsom salts, luke warm to cool water.

So sorry you fell Gershun!
Feel better soon!

Use crutches because you will undoubtedly injure it again when you try to move around.
Go very slowly, as it is a possibility you were moving too fast without thinking, and may have been dizzy as the cause.
Discover the cause with your doctor later.

Understand and react accordingly that persons over a certain age need to slow down. It does not mean you are old, it means you can age gracefully and safely. A fall is the first indication that you need to slow down.

Do a thorough medication review. With your doctor's advice, discontinue meds that can contribute to falls in Seniors. (My med was dc the statins at age 65).

The cause(s) of a fall can be neurological. Look into that, when your leg just gives way and key is that you don't know how you fell. imo.

Thx Willie, I took the ibuprofen and am resting it but I can wiggle my toes. It is swelling quite a bit and I bet it's going to be black and blue.
(1)
Report

I think R.I.C.E. pretty much covers it Gershun, along with Ibuprofen. I think that as long as you can still wiggle your toes you probably didn't break anything.... and you wouldn't catch me going to the ER here either, wait times for anything not life threatening are insane.

So I fell and sprained my foot today. Just thought I'd share. It hurts like hell. It's swelling even as we speak. I don't know how I fell. Or why I fell. But I fell. I think I tripped over my stupid computer cord.

Not going to the E R cause I suspect I'd be sitting there for hours. We are having a children's respiratory virus/flu/covid influx in B.C. right now so I'm probably safer at home.

Any home remedies anyone knows of to speed healing. I know rest, ice, compression, elevation but anything else come to mind?

I don't know who thought it was a good idea to start road construction in mid September but we got another whack of snow last night and I am not amused.... muddy ruts filled with slush and snow interspersed with great lakes of water, bad enough for cars but danged near impossible on foot 🤯 😠

I continue to learn a lot from the forum. Right now, I learned about the realities of heroic measures (CPR on elderly people, etc.). I didn’t know it can shatter the chest wall.

Thanks forum, for teaching me so much! And for many useful warnings!

Hi Poodle! I agree. In addition, for those of us with abusive moms, please get off the rollercoaster. I don’t mean, totally stop helping them (that’s up to every individual).

Our moms, with their sudden nastiness, changes in mood and emotion, seek to control our emotions. They seek to decide when we’re angry, sad, worried.

They intentionally create a rollercoaster, to control our emotions.

Get off the rollercoaster.

Another thought, I’m telling myself:

Poodle:
Don’t change your personality. You’re not normally a worrier. Now you worry a lot, depending on how the caregiving rollercoaster is going. But unfortunately, this rollercoaster will probably keep going up and down.

This means your emotions will keep going up and down.

I never intended to be a doctor, or enter the medical field. I never wanted to be part of the stress of dealing with medical emergencies. And yet, that’s what we’re all doing, us caregivers, dealing with the high stress of the ups and downs of emergencies. We’ve embarked on a “medical career” without realizing it.

So I’m telling myself: allow yourself to be happy. You’re doing a great job caring for your uncle.

Don’t let your emotions depend on this rollercoaster. Take control of your emotions. Get off the rollercoaster.

Poodle, I’m not saying you should become un-feeling and un-caring. I think you know what I mean.

I think I’m addicted to the forum. The forum is very useful for me. At the same time, I feel I’m getting addicted.

I help my elderly uncle. I think part of my addiction is because caregiving can get lonely, and here on the forum I feel we all understand each other.

But I think I need to watch out, because I don’t want to get too addicted.

For now, I continue with my addiction.

Hi Golden! I agree with you, and I’m making big changes.

I was just trying to insert some humor in all this. In fact, I’m wrapped up in bed as I type. Nice cup of tea. My stress/worry thermometer told me to take another day off.

venting - the thing about stress/worry to to make different decisions that will decrease stress and worry, also weight! It's all part of self care. Otherwise all you do is worry about your worries and stress about your stresses. I'm glad you took some time for you.

ff I had the seniors shot which is stronger than regular flu shots and more likely to cause side effects as it is a stronger stimulant to the immune system therefore more effective as a vaccine. This one hit me more than usual too yesterday but I feel fine today. I have to get my 3rd covid booster as well. I read yesterday that the 3rd one provides decent additional immunity but in the case of the 4th one the extra immunity is very short lived like a couple of weeks if I remember correctly. I expect to have some reaction to the 3rd booster but nothing bad. It's wise to plan a couple of down days after getting it.
