I'm 58 years of age. I am in need of hip replacements. The first is scheduled for March 10. I don't have any family to speak of. A friend brings me food daily. I need help with my housework and bathing but I cant afford to pay anyone. Are there any programs that could help me? I'm desperate at this point. It's very embarrassing for me to even ask this question even with anonymity of a computer. My only income is Social Security Disability and it barely covers my living expenses. This may not be the proper forum to ask this question but if not, perhaps someone can direct me. Any advice will be greatly appreciated.

I have a helper from the County Health Department. You are charged according to your income. They do almost everything, from bathing, shopping, cleaning and more. You might check with them.

Since you are on SSDI, you are probably eligible for other programs, as well. I assume you are in the US; each state's eligibility standards vary, but you may be eligible for Medicaid (Medi-Cal in California), and there are many ways you can arrange for in home care to help you out. Contact your local social services department and check to see if you are eligible. If not, there are other programs in some areas that can help defray the costs. But you are going to have to get out there and do the research. Call a local care agency and ask to talk with one of the case managers. He or she should be able to get you pointed in the right direction.

No, I've never had a case worker to my knowledge. I've never even head of it. I did have a friend who was on disability and I know he had help that came to his home 3 times per week. They cleaned, helped him get a bath, took his vitals and checked his medicine to make sure he was taking it correctly but he had a stroke and poor memory. He has passed away also so I cant ask him how he got the help. I don't need that much help. I just need help with housework and bathing. Thank you for your response. I need all the information I can get. I live in TN as did my friend who has passed away. He had that help for about 3 years but he was in much worse condition than I am although he had more mobility than I do.

Hi. My sister isn't living, but she had help through her Soc.Sec. disability. Do you have a case worker that you could ask? My sister lived in IL.
