My sister, who is first agent in my parents POA for healthcare and finance, filed to have my mother conserved by the court. I filed to conserve my mom as I am second agent in my parents POA. I lost and my mom is now conserved by a conservator. It is not working out as we have very different philosophies. I follow Dementia without Drugs and the new model of healthcare for dementia by meeting the needs of dementia patients, rather than drugging them. I am looking for a senior care consultant to review the healthcare issues with mom. I had already spent thousands of dollars on the court petition but I love my mother. Is there any legal aid attorney (senior care) who might be interested in my case? Andrea

I imagine since both daughters filed to be conservator, the judge selected someone outside the family for the task. From what you wrote it sounds like the person is also guardian of the body. What you do needs to pass through this person, since the court has given him/her authority. I am not really understanding what you want to accomplish except to keep your mother off medications. Of course, I can't be the judge of that, because I don't know what problems your mother might be having. If she is anxious, depressed, or can't sleep and has dementia, I think you should set your personal drug-free agenda back and realize you don't have control of the situation. Try instead to work to keep your mother as happy as possible under the circumstances.

BTW, I am not aware of a new model for drug-free handling of someone with advanced dementia. As far as I can tell, the model is currently to try to make their lives as comfortable and as safe as possible when the disease becomes bad. I agree that they should not be heavily drugged unless their lives have become torture to them.

Dementia without Drugs might be OK in early dementia, but if an MD writes an Rx and you don't give it to the patient, the Judge will take a very dim view of your care. They charge you with abuse and neglect and remove the patient to a safe facility. Sorry, but that's the cold facts.
