While living on a fixed income, I am caring for my adult disabled son. Is there any type of financial aid/support that I may be eligible for? I recently learned there are programs designed to help caregivers financially. Thank you.

My brother was disabled and when he received his benefits the social security representative said that he should pay mom room and board from this money. However only a portion, the rest was his money .

Curious about what programs you have heard about that helps caregivers financially. I know some States have "Cash and Counseling" programs, but that depends on the State as each one has their own rules and regulations.

Depending on your son's disability, you could check on the Internet for a website that is geared toward that disability to see if they have a clearinghouse on such information.

In the State that I am in I receive chore money for taking care of my adult disabled brother. You have to account for the tasks you perform i.e. bathing, grooming, medications, laundry, food preparation. A social worker comes out twice a year and evaluates his needs. He is on SSI and has Medicare and Medicaid. Of course your son would have to be eligible for Medicaid. I dont know what States have this program but you could call your State's Community Mental Health Department and inquire about this info. Good luck.
