Facility pharmacy is requesting I sign a financial responsibility agreement requesting me to take financial responsibility if mom exhausts Medicare days. She is in long-term care and back after a hospital stay but doing well. The form seems focused on copays and deductibles. Mom has been at facility two years but the servicing pharm has decided it needs these forms and signatures now. I'm feeling very skeptical. What happens if I don't sign the forms?

If you have a financial power of attorney for your mother and the facility is asking you to sign it strictly in that capacity - signed "power of attorney for Mrs Mother" - then that's one thing. You are accepting responsibility as her POA for paying her bills with her money. Fair enough.

If they are asking you to act as her guarantor, and it's your money they're talking about, then I struggle to see what's in this deal for you and I wouldn't sign it. But if that's the case, call them and ask what exactly they are expecting you to do.

If it were me, I'd be finding out what would happen very quickly.

I would not sign them.

Country mouse raises a valid point, POA, no problem, otherwise, red flag. The ultimate question may become, if there is no funding for meds, they're just going to let her suffer or die? Not very likely I would think. What is moms financial status and is she mentally competent?

Is she on Medicaid and Medicare?

My loved one is and she is responsible for some out of pocket costs for medication, even after Medicare and then Medicaid cover it, although it sounds bizarre.

She has to pay that from her little $66.00 that she gets to keep each month, but they can't force her to pay more and anything that I signed on her behalf, I signed as POA on her behalf.. I did not sign anything that would obligate myself to pay for her expenses.

I would talk to a lot of people before I signed anything obligating yourself.

Oh, I forgot to add that she may get help with medication costs from a supplemental medication policy. My cousin is in AL and the pharmacy that they use told me that they find the best deal and that's the supplemental company they use.

Thanks so much for the replies, I'm so grateful. Mom is Medicare and Medicaid which should cover her costs. It seems the pharmacy is asking for forms that the nursing home has on record. I do not have nor do I want to establish a direct relationship with the pharm, it appears by signing direct forms that's what would be happening. The nursing home has administrative issues which could be why I'm getting a request from the pharm for forms. The key is the pharm has been servicing my mom for two years now..
