She has a sinus infection and needs meds 3x/day but we're lucky if she takes one. She lives in a retirement home that offers assisted living (she's in an independent living apt now) and medication management but she thinks she doesn't need it. She sometimes forgets to take meds or can't remember if she took them or intentionally skips doses because she thinks she doesn't need to. I think she's in the beginning stages of dementia but she denies having any memory or cognitive issues and won't see a doctor. My brother or I are there every day to help remind her to take her meds (and do other things) but can't be there 3x a day. Any ideas how to get her to take her meds or what to say or suggestions? I would be very grateful.
Talk to her about assigning you her healthcare power of attorney. Sooner or later, she's going to need your help.
Could you perhaps say that because of the sinus infection you'd like her to have a really thorough check up to see that all is well? That could - if the doctor is conscientious - include a mini mental state exam but if she's really frightened of the very idea it doesn't have to.
Mind you, if she's that anxious about a painless, two minute question and answer session there's a clue…
All the same, I'd start with a top to toe physical exam if you can possibly persuade her. Could be blood pressure issues, heart issues, pain issues, all sorts - things that can be nipped in the bud if you're quick. Best of luck, please update.
My father started to have a check list with times so that she sees we are not trying to over medicate her, sometimes she will check them off herself.
Good Luck and God Bless!!
