I know this varies from State to State, but would someone please point me in the right direction. I am the medical and financial POA for Mom (84) who is living with me so that I can apply for Medicaid (possibly spousal VA) senior housing benefits. I know this much: she WILL qualify for financial Medicaid bene's b/c she has no assets. I'm talking nothing, except a '97 Mazda and less than $900/mo SS. The question is, in your experience, what type of senior housing does Medicaid pay for if the official mental/psyc diagnosis is dementia? (and psychosis-NOS) but physically healthy, except for incontinence? Thank you all!

Find Care & Housing
Her housing placement is recommended by her MD. Medicaid will ask for records of where that SS check went for the last five years. Every penny. If she needs a Memory Care facility and she can account for all $900 x 60 months ($54,000) as only paying for her care, they will pick up the tab.Since she lived with you, they will want to be absolutely sure she wasn't picking up YOUR tab.

I had Mother in an ALF. They accepted her based on the fact that they THOUGHT she was eligible for MEDICAID. Well after 4 months they kicked her out because MEDICAID would not pay for her unless she was in need of 'SPECIALIZED CARE' for her dementia. The only way she would be eligible was if she was a 'wanderer' and could be placed in a locked facility which her doctor would not order. This was in the state of NC. Also, Mother was over the income limit for MEDICAID by $37.00.

What is the income limit for Medicaid and does it vary by state?

Yes, it varies by stat. My mom was eligible for Medicaid (nursing home) in Floirda, but not in North Caroline. The lower the standard of living is in the state depends on the income limits.

PamS: Thx for the info. I'm still laughing about the "picking up the tab for me" statement... we usu. run out of groceries by (approx) the 20th of the month, so, after 9 mths of this, I sent Mom to her brother's house for 3 nites, and it has been GLORIOUS! Did I mention that we run out of groceries b/c I refuse to stretch my fixed, disability income any further b/c she runs out of her SS money 2 days after she gets it b/c she gambles? Oh yes, that's why she was kicked out of my sister's house. So, "supporting" us has never been--and never will be--an issue.

LauraB: If you Google "long term Medicaid ____ {insert your State}" it will take you to the website that tells you what the income limits are. Good luck, and start the application process NOW. And get a POA if you can, b/c the paperwork is very tedious and time-consuming, so if your loved one is anything like mine, they will be grateful that you are willing to complete it for them.

KayBee58, when she applies for Medicaid, be sure you have her casino statements for five years. That is proof of where money went.

I think the gambling can hurt your request for Medicaid, because she will have undocumented losses, hard to prove were the money went. I know gambling can be an issue for the elderly. They find the bells and lights attractive, and slots allow them an interactive activity. The casinos cater to them to fill the afternoon hours offering tour buses and lunch or gambling vouchers.

Wonder if anyone has come across this.
