Hello all,
I wanted to get advice again from you fine folks.
My mom has not had any food or drink in 2 days. She’s in a deep sleep. I’ve positioned her on her back but she is breathing with her mouth open and her head is sort of tilted back.
She has suffered for 14-15 years with this disease.
Would anyone have any ideas how long she can last with no food or water ( well... ensure)? I have read 3 days.. then I read a month!
I plan on calling our hospice nurse tomorrow but she is ALWAYS so vague. Guess she doesn’t want to mislead me in any way.
Thanks so very much to you all
This will be a long night.
I let her sleep and went to get breakfast. When I returned, she had died and it had been less than 5 minutes since the nurse had been with her.
It's not easy, even if you know they are ready. God bless you.
It could really be anywhere from 12 hours to a week. If someone is actively dying, I think they tend to go pretty fast after they stop eating but it’s not uncommon for them to live 2 weeks. Just from what you’ve described, it sounds like it could be a few days.
ensure was discontinued also. No food or liquid for 3 days now.
Her breathing is sort of stopping for a second or two then breathing much longer breaths. She seems comfortable. Still on no meds what so ever.
She does open her eyes when I reposition her.
Hospice cane today and said “ she is progressing as she should”... ?? Huh... I didn’t ask.
I am sorry that you are facing this loss. I pray that your mom passes peacefully and may God grant you grieving mercies and comfort during this time.
