For over 6 years I've been a live-in caregiver for an older man. I have never had a day off I'm there on Holidays cooking big meals,I feel Iike I'm getting taken advantage of. Now. this man decides to serve me with an unlawful detainer stating that I haven't paid rent, an owe him rent money for the past year, Maybe he thinks he should have been paying me as a caregiver, and evicting me is a way for him to avoid this, I never had to pay rent. I'm 68 and on SSI and SS. I don't want to become homeless,I can't afford to pay rent with the amount of money I get each month, and need to be on a low income governmental subsidized housing program, but there's just waiting lists to be on a waiting list, I'm not sure what I can do about this, any suggestions? Thanks, Kathy.

This is why women's shelters are there.
You have spent your time living free, but not having a job or a job history.
We often see people end up homeless and helpless and with no job history or savings in this very manner.
Whether this gentleman kicks you out tomorrow or dies the day after is a moot point. You are on your way to homelessness.
Call APS today. Not for HIM, but for yourself. Tell them you have nothing and nowhere to live. They will guide you.
I am so sorry. We have seen this situation many times here. That it serves as a stark warning to others doesn't help YOU and I am aware of this, but it took you a lifetime to get to this situation, and you are now aging and helpless. You need the help of those agencies created for those in dire need. Again, I am so very sorry. I cannot even begin to imagine the worry and the fears, but this is where you are. I hope you can update us.

I'm sorry you are in this bind. That man... what a jerk.

To clarify, I'm assuming there was never an employment contract nor a lease contract between you two?

I read this article and you should definitely read it to the end. You are basically being evicted but you may be able to claim hardship in order to extend the time you have to find another place to live.

An unlawful detainer action happens very fast so you will need to pay attention to the response time frames in the article so that you won't get hustled out sooner rather than later.

I wish you all the best as you come out on top.

Contact your nearest legal aid or tenants union to get help in delaying eviction. There was never a lease nor an agreement to pay rent.

Yes to contacting social services for your county to see what options are available to you, like Section 8 housing (but depending on where you live there may be waiting lists).
