Just taken off fentanyl patches. Is this "normal"? He had always been sharp as a tack! No major health issues til now.

Sorry this is happening, Leda. I would call his doctor first thing tomorrow morning and advise him or her of what you’re noticing.

Hope you get some good guidance.

You say in your profile that your husband has dementia/Alzheimer's, and what you are describing often occurs in folks with Alzheimer's, so it may just mean that he is now entering a new phase of his mental decline.
And of course the effects from the anesthesia from his surgeries, are also known to make any mental decline worse as well. Sometimes that will get some better, and sometimes it doesn't.
You may want to talk to his Dr. about these issues. Wishing you and your husband the best.

I am a bit confused, you say he is in a facility, has dementia yet sharp as a tack.
Anesthesia for anyone that has dementia can be a problem and to have 2 surgeries doubles the problem. Maybe even more than doubles.
And recovery from any trauma is difficult and when you have dementia it is even more difficult to recover.
I would talk to the doctor, inform them of the change and the concerns. But your husband may not return to the baseline he was at prior to surgery. Or if he does it may take a while.

Unless your husband has dementia, this is NOT NORMAL. Please take him to the ER pronto. This is may be an indicator of a clot in the brain.

Could be “normal” for anybody coming off of fentanyl! My husband was on it for cancer.
