"Your license is suspended" and no further details. "But I need the truck to (insert reason) " "NO" firmly and without further detail. Just repeat the mantra. You cannot reason with dementia or denial. You just say "NO".

I think FreqFlyer has it right. The suspended license is your "out" - he asks for the truck, you say, "Sorry Dad, but your license is suspended and you can't drive." End of story. That way, it's not YOU saying he can't drive, but the state that suspended his license.

Fortunately, my MIL was able to keep her husband away form the car keys. But, they went to spend the night at their daughter's and he went outside and got the tractor started. Please don't let your guard down.

Taking away ones independents isn't easy, I can't blame the person for being upset with the situation. No different than a teen or young male adult who has a suspended license and the parents took away the car. No license, no car. No ands, ifs or buts. End of discussion.

grubby, ok, I can now see Dad's point because when it comes to farm land, one doesn't need to be licensed or have a vehicle registered to drive on private property. If he brings that up, tell him the laws have changed.

What about horse power, or a tractor, or a 4-wheeler?

Tell him it's being repaired? That could go on pretty much indefinitely, I'd have thought.

What does your father actually need in terms of getting about the place? Is the family able to take him anywhere he wants to go?

Great answers! the sticking point is there are five children I live across the road. We farm 150 acres. He says he'll only drive the truck on the farm (just more than half is on my side of the road). When I point out that he can't cross the road he says things like "no one will care". I keep to the suspension but I would like some ideas for responses other than the one I use a lot "I understand what you want however I can't give it to you."

Dad has two tractors, a small John Deere with a front loader (broken steering or rather loose veers on road no one will pull a wagon full of beans with it) he has a Manards Yardsport which he travels three miles into town (pop 2,500) Police Chief told him to be careful instead of taking a stiffer stance. But it getting too cold to ride it to town. Thus the need? for the truck.

Grubby, if I'm reading correctly, your dad takes a tractor into town....that would concern me. He is still in great danger by doing this. He obviously is not able to appreciate the grave risks. So, he may also wander or place himself in other dangers. I would not leave him unattended at any time. He could take the notion to take off and disappear.

I never thought my loved one would try to take off, but she did several times out of the blue. Luckily she was caught before she got out of the parking lot, but if you dad is physically able, he might be able to walk miles down a road or into the woods.
