My mother has been on resperidol for 5 weeks and has developed a bad rash. I believe it is because of this new medication. The doctor wants to put her immediately on another med, but I would like to wait a few days to see if the rash will go away before putting her on another medication. As her medical Power of Attorney, do I have a right to request this?

Yes, but why keep her on something that you believe is causing a rash? Why not change her med immediately, since her doctor recommended it? I'm not seeing the logic of this.

Risperdal is known to cause rashes in some people. But, if your mom is taken off of this drug cold turkey, she can wind up with withdrawal side effects that will likely be unpleasant. Her doctor is probably wanting to start her on another drug immediately to avoid these side effects of withdrawal. Please speak to her doctor about you wanting her to take a break between stopping Risperdal and starting the new med.......the doctor can guide you, we can only guess here on the forum as laymen.

Hopefully mom was not taking Risperdal with cola or tea, as that can lead to ugly side effects for some reason.

As POA, you always have the right to request anything you'd like. But again, have the doctor explain to you why he's making the choices to prescribe what he is.

Best of luck to you.

Thank you for your reply. It makes so much sense. I will see if I can contact the doctor and speak to him. I am new to all of this nursing home stuff. There is so much they don’t tell you. I’m so glad I have this forum to ask questions.
